Do You Need a Reboot? Can being over stimulated be a detriment to health? I’m talking about our senses being constantly bombarded. I feel this particularly when I visit London. My senses are being filled with information; new sights, noise and smells. I can literally feel my mind chugging away in the background. This type of stimulation can be exciting, but exhausting too! The processing power of our body is remarkable. It can take in so much to enable us to learn and do. However, just like a computer, our system can become overloaded and begin to slow down, sometimes even giving us system failure messages just as your computer would! And do you take heed? Do you know what they are? In fact one of the first and foremost signs is your energy level. This is a great indicator – what level of tiredness you feel. We don’t have anything in our society that measures energy levels (now there’s an idea for an inventor…) so it relies heavily on you to set the scale, which most of us do subconsciously. One of the simplest ways to recharge is rest, yet hardly anyone sees this as a remedy to their ails. It is one of the solutions most prescribed by doctors but least taken by patients. It is the most natural and yet the most expensive – not in terms of money in terms but time. For those of us that do not have enough hours in the day, time is a valuable resource and rest is seen as the least valuable because it gets in the way of getting things done. The modern day constant pressures or overwhelmingly busy days will kick in the body’s natural response - to recharge - and it does this by sleep or rest. In fact so many of us are running on constant adrenaline that often the body will naturally want a complete shut down or indeed a total reboot! Our society has even bought out products to help you not to do this - stimulants such as red bull, coffee, tea, sugar fixes or alcohol will keep you going that extra mile so that you can fit in even more into the day. So when the system does eventually crash and you find yourself in no fit state to do anything other than say nothing, then it really really really means you need to finally take a look at your life and not to reach for pills to help you. In fact what you need more than anything is a break. This is why I see so many totally exhausted people, not only in my clinics but also on my retreat. The retreat I run (taking place in June) is there to help you totally reboot - take time out, let your body be nourished with excellent high quality food and be looked after by a team of caring, compassionate and fun people. So the answer to the question I started with is: yes over stimulation is detrimental to your health when you don’t allow yourself adequate periods to rest. It’s your responsibility, you just need to do it! Rumana will be running a Yoga, Walking and Health Retreat in Spain June 21st-28th more details please visit the website or call 0845 680 1418.
