Naturally SpeakingNewsletter by Naturopath Rumana Zahn Hello and Welcome! I am grateful to many of you for sharing this newsletter with others and spreading the word. Thank you. Anyone can receive it by simply registering at the Rumana Health website. This time of the year I generally recommend you start thinking about doing an immune programme to help prepare your body before the winter. If you're struggling with stress as well then it is vital you look at stress reduction methods. I recently went to a talk by Dr Anand who presented Heart Math - it's a simple way of analysing your heart rate variability and therefore determining the stress you are under. He teaches simple techniques on how you can improve your results and therefore manage the effects of stress on your body/mind. If you can make his next talk, I thoroughly recommend it. Its on Wednesday 17th October 6pm at 18a Elmfield Road, Gosforth, Newcastle NE3 4BP and it's free. Do make the effort to go; it's not usual to find a highly qualified doctor talking about alternative options! If you can't make it but would like a personal one to one assessment then please contact the Rumana Health Clinic on 0845 680 14 18. In this issue:
With Love
Personal Reflections Complementary and alternative medicine gets a fair share of criticism. I try not to take it personally working in this field but it does bite. Although we do not fully have the proof or the scientific evidence that medics hark on about I get fed up with the lack of 'common sense' when it comes to delivering medicine. Don't get me wrong I am by no means anti-modern medicine - it does have its place, I will and certainly do recommend people use it where necessary. Let me give you an example. When Harvey and Marilyn Diamond wrote the book 'Fit for Life' they portrayed the dangers in using hydrogenated oils in foods. They were laughed at by the food industry and modern medics. 20 years later the industry themselves are saying that eating hydrogenated fats are so dangerous to us that they are equivalent to rodent droppings to human health! We don't always have all the answers and when working in a pioneering field sometimes you have to establish and gather as much evidence as there is available and learn to improve on it. But if I know something has benefits I'm not going to wait 20 years before science catches up... bear in mind I will assess it's level of risk, of course, before embarking on it. You know your body better than anyone else. In fact I believe many of us have the answers or even know the answers to our health issues but we look around for confirmation. Whether it's the amount of constant pressure you're under or not eating properly - DO something. Don't wait. Even putting little things into place will help you in the long term. Sadly, most people put it off until it get's really bad. How much worse does your pain have to get before you do something?
How Healthy is Your Workplace?
I have recently been working with a company delivering a Wellbeing at Work programme and two important things happened... Read the experiences of one organisation...
Have You Experienced an Ayurvedic Massage? Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical science. Ayu means life and Veda means knowledge or science. The literal meaning of the word Ayurveda is a science dealing not only with treatment of diseases but also a complete holistic way of life. It incorporates a comprehensive knowledge about spiritual, mental and social health. Here's what Mark experienced... Dear Rumana Having never had a massage, and not knowing what to expect, I was very fortunate in being put in touch with Sangeeta. She was very helpful in putting me at ease , even though I was semi-naked and covered in olive oil, she helped me to relax. So much so, that I have returned on a number of occasions. I have recommended her to my family and friends, in that if they ever require a relaxing stress free period, without having to go to a Spa, go and see Sangeeta. It is definitely, one of the best recommendations I have received. Mark Betts
Express Yourself
Are You a Good Communicator? The most effective communicators are those that are open and direct and are able to express, feelings, needs and wants to others. Openness begets trust and builds confidence. When we have self respect and respect for others, we tend to be happy with ourselves and with our relationships - we tend to treat ourselves and others well and usually earn their respect. They, in turn tend to act in a decent manner towards us. Thus, a cycle of respectful and caring interactions build. Breakdown in relationships is often due to a breakdown in communication. Are you If you answered NO to any of the above, consider developing your confidence and skills in communicating effectively. Which Remedy? There are so many good ones on the market but which one is the best to go for...? Coenzyme Q10 is an enzyme which is widespread in the human body. It is used to tranform food into energy (ATP). Mostly found in fish and meats but the amounts are very limited. It has been found particularly helpful with conditions such as angina, high blood pressure and general heart and circulatory problems. It has many other benefits too such as stimulates metabolism and helps with weight loss, encourages healthy gums and helps prevent migraines. Research has also highlighted it for those with high cholesterol. Coenzyme Q10 is available in supplement form, where it is best taken within an oil supplement. Solgar have recently launched a Nutri Nano CoQ10 which is 3x better absorbed than the powder form of CoQ10. It is available from most healthfood stores. Rumana runs a Walk In Clinic at the Nutri Centre, Tesco Kingston Park Newcastle every Friday 2-6pm. Pop in for a free 10 min consultation.
