Are Your Emotions Wearing You Out?

ExhaustedEnergy is the fuel that drives us, but what happens when we lack so much that we can barely keep going? And is it just the physical effort we make that takes our energy or can emotions affect us too?

In Britain it is estimated about 250,000 people suffer from Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) also previously known as ME. It is a condition which has only recently been accepted by the medical profession, probably because so many of the symptoms have previously been linked to other conditions. The symptoms can occur after a viral infection but can also come on quite gradually and the cause is unknown.

CFS can affect all ages. The youngest I’ve treated was a girl in her teens. Her symptoms started from the age of 13 getting worse during periods of stress at school. The main symptom is continuous tiredness or fatigue which can be so debilitating that often individuals find themselves sleeping for part of the day. Other symptoms often include painful muscles and joints as well as sleep disturbances, digestive disorders and poor memory and concentration.

With such little energy, motivation to get up and do anything is severely affected. Schooling is affected, as is work and social life. There is little if any conventional medical treatment for this condition.

Because CFS is considered to be a combination of several different conditions, methods for its treatment are a matter of debate. Treatment can involve using a combination approach; medicines to reduce symptoms, diet and nutrition, herbal, homeopathy and behavioural / psychological therapies.

I would like to mention the work of Dr John Eaton: during 1996-2006 he discovered, whilst working with ME/CFS patients, that the way in which individuals processed their thoughts and emotions had a huge impact on the their nervous/hormonal system. So much so that not dealing with the mind-body messages or the harmful programmes that the person may be running through their minds would come out as physical symptoms within the body. This correlated with much of the new branch of research PNEI (Psycho-neuro-endo-immunology) on the physical and chemical effects the emotions have on the body. He called his system Reverse Therapy and to date he has helped thousands of CFS sufferers.

North East based Lyn White was an enthusiastic, energetic nurse until she got CFS and subsequently had to leave her job. She suffered for 3 years before she came across Reverse Therapy. Lyn successfully used mind-body techniques to help rid herself of the debilitating symptoms and subsequently went on to become a trained Reverse Therapist helping others to do the same.
