Cancer and Salvestrols I recently attended a Kinesiology Conference where one of the papers given was about a fascinating discovery made in the fight against cancer. With statistics showing that cancer is on the increase and that one in five of us will have cancer in 10 years time, the work of Professor Gerry Potter and his team at De Montfort University in Leicester is more than welcoming. The principle methods of treating cancer by orthodox medicine are surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy – also known as cut, burn or poison. Often these methods not only destroy cancer cells but also healthy cells too and can cause considerable side effects. There have been some major discoveries which have taken place over the last few years involving enzymes which selectively work on the tumour tissue and leave healthy cells well alone. There are many different enzymes present in the body whose function is to assist in various processes, for example in digesting foods. In his presentation, Professor Potter described how compounds called Salvestrols activate certain enzymes only found in cancer cells. Once this reaction is initiated it causes the diseased cell to be destroyed. Whilst he is currently arranging clinical trials with a drug company in America which may take up to 8 years, take note that these Salvestrols are also present in certain foods – namely fruits, root vegetables and some medicinal herbs. So why is it that cancers are not reducing if we eat more fruits and vegetables? One of his finding was that Salvestrols are significantly depleted by the use of fungicides and food processing. If you want to find a natural product high in these compounds, look for Fruitforce or Salvestrol Professional, available from www.fruitforce.co.uk. I am about to integrate into my practice some of the work done by Dr Rosy Daniel, who produced the Cancer Lifeline Kit and was the Medical Doctor at the Bristol Cancer Care Centre. She fully incorporates natural medicine in her work and emphasises that cancer sufferers need to address all aspects of their health – mind, body, emotions and spirit. In the North we also have the Hexham Cancer Bridge Centre who are doing excellent work in advising sufferers on the holistic approaches available. She is a leader within the field of Natural Medicine and writes and speaks extensively on the subject.
